20
Years of Two-Way TV

The
goal is the same: to bring people together to explore
the important and problematic aspects of their common
lives as human beings on Planet Earth.
The media NGO Internews Network
was founded in 1982 and is the precursor of Internews
Interactive. Internews' mission was to use media
to foster international understanding.
One of its first projects was a
two-way interactive satellite television program
linking Soviet and American citizens in dialogue
and song, in an effort to address the danger of nuclear
war. The program led to a number of satellite programs
known as "Spacebridges," which linked people
in the USSR and elsewhere to Americans. During that
period, US-Soviet relations had hit a nadir during
which President Reagan described the USSR as an 'Evil
Empire.' Mediation was used to help create understanding
during tense videolinks broadcast on ABC News, which
ultimately won two national Emmy Awards.
Digital video technology has made "two-way" video
tools more accessible and less costly. During the
next phase of videobridging which began in 1993,
compressed digital videoconferencing was used for
a series of programs broadcast throughout Europe
and on PBS, called Vis á Vis. Then, webcams
allowed us to connect citizens to the TV studio.
Next, personal digital communications devices will
let many more people connect with television.
